Comey’s Testimony Rejected

June 9, 2017 | Expert Insights

Donald Trump’s personal attorney has denied allegations made by fired FBI Director, James Comey against the US President who has accused him of leaking the privileged information.

The Controversial Testimony

Mr. Comey’s seven page written testimony that was released on 8th June gave details about the interactions Comey had with Mr. Trump. Comey in his testimony, stated that Trump’s behaviour was ‘inappropriate’ and ‘illegal’. The President was accused for demanding loyalty from the FBI Director and interfering in the Federal investigation and then firing Comey after his requests was not granted.

According to the testimony, Trump had asked Comey to stop probing into Flynn’s investigation case, centering on his calls with the Russian ambassador during his transition and asked him to publicly declare that he was not under investigation.

Allegations against Trump?

Marc Kasowitz, Trump’s personal lawyer has rejected allegations made by James Comey. He said that Trump had never tried to interfere in Flynn’s investigation process, rather the leaks by Mr. Comey should be investigated. Mr. Kasowitz said that the former FBI director should be prosecuted for leaking to his friends, a privileged conversation he had with the President, one of which he testified was classified.

The attorney was seen justifying the President on the basis of the statement passed by Comey. The testimony revealed that Trump will not be personally involved in the investigation. Kasowiltz said that in the testimony, Comey had made it clear that the President did not try to impede the investigation of Russia’s interference in the 2016 election.

Kasowitz stated that the Director of National Security Agency, Admiral Rogers has confirmed that Trump did not direct Comey to do anything illegal or inappropriate. Trump has also not asked him for loyalty in regard to the investigation case. Rather the attorney believes that the President is entitled to loyalty from his administrative officers.

Trump believes that there are members who are trying to undermine the administration but he would continue to fight and win. Kasowitz said that such leaks would be left to the authorities to decide whether investigation is required.

Assessment

Although Kasowiltz has blamed Comey for leaking privileged conversations with the President, the matter does not overshadow Trump’s attempt to tamper with legal matters. If Comey is prosecuted for leaking privileged information, Trump would also have to face consequences, once proven for his involvement in the investigation case. In this regard, the battle between Trump and Comey seem to have leveled against each other
