To assess how restrictions on trade, closing down of international borders and the rise of nationalist rhetoric could severely cripple and re define international trade and even impact the ability to source adequate testing and treatment materials

Context

The 84th Synergia forum will assess the impact the global pandemic has had on international trade and governance. The fact that there is no clarity in communication as to how certain countries and leaders will react after the pandemic only deepens the difficulties and aggravates discrimination. Robert Greenhill has had a ringside view of international trade both as a corporate leader and as the head of the World Economic forum and Rohinton Medhora has closely studied the impact the pandemic will have on world trade.

Key Questions:

  • Can the mechanisms of globalization that shaped the twentieth-century world economy be salvaged to continue delivering prosperity?
  • Is there a need for nations to re affirm commitment to principles of international trade cooperation?
  • Will international trade be restricted between countries which form an alliance or a block and will that impact world order?
