Europe: Not as free, Not as secure

From a European perspective, it seems that the world is changing, and not for the better. EU Security strategy started with the famous sentence."Europe has never been so secure, so prosperous, so free." This sentiment was probably even correct at that time; at least, it sounded correct. However, if you repeat that sentence today, it doesn't sound as correct anymore.
The period in Europe prior to the fall of the USSR was a period when the danger of the outbreak of war was not enormous, yet it was a difficult period. The consequence of that war would have had catastrophic consequences in a short term. Europe no longer faces that particular threat of war, but there are a whole new set of issues that it must deal with today.
