A clear picture of India’s drug discovery

India’s domestic pharmaceutical industry excels in the production of generic medicines but the rate of drug discovery is staggeringly below the global industry average. Drug discovery is an expensive, slow and risky business and most Indian companies do not have sufficient financial resources to take the risk to develop a new drug from scratch. Does India have the resources to become the pharmaceutical powerhouse, it aspires to be?
