Background

ISIS a Sunni Muslim terror group has claimed responsibility for various attacks across the globe in the past years. Iran is actively involved in decentralizing and fighting against terror groups such as ISIS in Iraq and Syria. Despite this the Sunni terror group never attacked the country in the past. The Tehran attack is the first attack by ISIS in the Shiite majority Iran.  This attack proves that the terror group is yet again trying to establish its dominance in the region.

Analysis

As per reports, gunmen armed with Kalashnikovs entered the parliament while attackers open fired at the mausoleum which happens to be the tomb of the founder Ayatollah Khomeini. Officials at Tehran claimed that one of the attackers detonated the suicide vest while the others were killed by the security forces. There has been no reports or statement clarifying the identity of the 12 dead persons. A third attack was foiled by the security forces.

Assessment

Terrorism has been a source of concern since time immemorial. But the current trend in terrorism has had a greater impact socially, economically, politically and religiously in comparison to the past. Today terror group such as the ISIS have been gaining popularity and momentum. This could potentially throw the entire global political system into an untamable chaos. The terror attacks such as this should be considered as warnings to the governments across the globe to improve their security system. Countries need to put aside their internal conflicts and focus on internal as well as international cooperation in fighting against terrorism with the value for human life being put at higher pedestal.
